The book is a multigenerational drama series set in the Adirondack mountains of New York. that follows the disappearance of a teenage girl named Barbara Van Laar, who comes from a wealthy family.
When the 13-year-old goes missing from her family’s summer camp in 1975, it leads some to question the unsolved disappearance of her older brother 14 years prior.
In 2024, the former president of the United States, 64, named the novel among his favorite books and music of the summer, according to the Obama Foundation’s official website.
That December, PEOPLE named the New York Times bestseller as its top book of the year.
The God of the Woods was also thrust back into the spotlight when Swift was heard listening to it in audiobook form during her new docuseries, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour | The End of an Era (streaming now on Disney+).
While the title was not specifically named, the following excerpt was heard in a scene: "casting spotlights here and there across the ground. At a certain point, Tracy understood where they were going. Under normal circumstances she would have felt afraid."
Sony Pictures Television will produce the upcoming Netflix series, while Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty will executive produce for Original Film — and it won’t be the first time Moore has had a book transformed into a show.
