- Amy Adams says that the surprise new cast member was "lovely and committed and fun."

*Cape Fear* just revealed a major new cast member.
The conclusion of episode 3 of the Apple TV series unmasked a mysterious character who has been following Max Cady (Javier Bardem) — and the character is played by none other than Juliette Lewis, who also starred in the 1991 film version of *Cape Fear* directed by Martin Scorsese.

Though we don't know with 100 percent certainty at this point, it's extremely unlikely that Lewis is playing the same character that she portrayed in the film, as that would imply that the '91 movie and the new show take place in the same universe, which would mean there have been two Max Cadys tormenting two Bowden families 35 years apart from each other.
Instead, it seems that Lewis, who portrayed the daughter of Nick Nolte's protagonist in the film, is playing a new character unrelated to her previous *Cape Fear* experience. The actress isn't the first performer to appear in two versions of *Cape Fear*, either — Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, and Martin Balsam, who starred in the 1962 *Cape Fear*, also appeared in small roles in the '91 movie.

Lewis' character is first seen wearing a medical mask when the characters arrive at the hospital in episode 2. Max later sees her following him on the sidewalk shortly after he obtains his new dog. She reappears in episode 3 as she trails Max, Anna (Amy Adams), and the documentary crew on their trip to sign Max's settlement agreement. Her last appearance before her unmasking comes later in episode 3, when she knocks on Anna's door and asks to sing Max a song and give him a present, which appears to be a dog collar.

In the final scene of the episode, Max comes home to find his door open, and discovers a manila envelope that says "HI MAX <3 play me." He then takes a VHS tape out of the envelope and plays it on his TV, which reveals Lewis' character taking off her mask and saying, "Hey Max. I heard you got out" before singing a chilling rendition of the Butthole Surfers' "Jingle of a Dog's Collar." Max freaks out upon seeing the video — and after finding a dog collar in the envelope — smashes the TV with a fireplace poker.

*Cape Fear* showrunner Nick Antosca tells ** that he wanted Lewis to be involved with the show from the moment that he began brainstorming it.
"I always wanted Juliette to be in it," he says, noting that he previously worked with Lewis when she guest starred on his 2019 Hulu series *The Act*. "I knew from that point, from even just the initial conversation about the rights, that I would love to have her be in it because she showed up for one episode in *The Act*. She was so great. And so I wanted to work with her again."
Antosca was thrilled to bring Lewis on board when he finally began production on the series. "Years later, when we were actually making the show, we called her and said, 'Hey, remember I talked about that a little bit — you want to come do it?'" he recalls. "And fortunately she was available."

Antosca is a great admirer of Lewis' work. "I've always been a fan," he says. "I obviously tremendously admired her performance in the 1991 *Cape Fear* movie, as well as *Natural Born Killers* and tons of other things."

Adams also tells EW that she was extremely excited to work with Lewis. "She and I have a lot more interaction coming up," she teases. "And I loved her. We had so much fun. I think she discovered that I was weird, and I think that was good, because I'm not sure she expected me to be as weird as I am. If you can discover what brand of weird you are, you're set."
She continued, "She's lovely and committed and fun. We had so many powerful actors on this, and not a single person wasn't a team player. And that's a gift."
*Cape Fear* premieres new episodes every Friday on Apple TV.
